Concrete House by Marte.Marte Architects

The massive, fort-like exterior betrays the warm and inviting interior of this Concrete House.

Concrete is an interesting material that’s become an important part of modern architecture. In the hands of masters like Tadao Ando, who can bring out the best in concrete, the material becomes warm, inviting, and even luxurious — quite different from the perception that most people have of concrete being cold, dark, and uncomfortable. Maybe this new discovery of a softer side of concrete is what’s bringing about a more widespread use of concrete in residential applications.

Located in Austria, the Concrete House by Marte.Marte Architects is a prime example, with most of the residence having been built and finished in concrete. From the outside, the massive concrete structure can feel intimidating, with its sharp orthogonal lines and strong presence feeling almost fort-like. However, once inside, it’s a completely different story. The interior spaces are inviting and warm, thanks to the strategic use of beautifully stained wood on the floors, counter tops, tables, and in some instances, even the ceilings. Paired with modern furniture and stunning wide open views of the surrounding landscape, the Concrete House suddenly turns into cozy and inviting modern home.
