Thank the lord, the BMW M2 Coupe is finally here! Well, sort of. It won’t be available until the spring of 2016 and will probably go on sale as a 2017 model, but BMW has just announced the production of the M2 and released some juicy details ahead of its debut.
Although the new BMW M2 follows the new BMW nomenclature, the M2 is a direct descendant of the visceral 1 Series M Coupe. We’re all hoping that the M2 also follows in the 1 Series M Coupe’s tradition of back to basics driving fun.
While the BMW M235i offered ample performance, the new M2 is on another level in terms of performance and style. The BMW M2 is now available with a seven-speed M DCT transmission that can launch the car to 60 in 4.3 seconds, made possible by Launch Control. Thankfully, BMW retains the amazing six-speed manual transmission for purists. The aggressive body makes the car look like its on steroids and clearly shows off the car’s performance potential while the 19-inch wheels and tires not only set it up like a proper M car, the Michelin Pilot Super Sport should offer just enough grip for the track but also enough give for some sideways action.
Despite the car following closely in the footsteps of the 1 M, the trick DCT gear box and advances technology should make it more modern machine than its raw predecessor. Pricing and other details will become available closer to the official release date.
