French watchmaker, Airain, announced the upcoming release of the Type 20 Re-Edition, a faithful recreation of Airain’s original 1950s Type 20 pilot’s chronograph. Airain was one of the selected suppliers of the Type 20 model for the French Army at that time. A unique feature of the Type 20 was the ‘flyback’ function, which allows the pilot to easily reset the chronograph hand, and quickly start timing a new event without the lag in time of pushing two more buttons. Other characteristics of the Type 20 chronograph include a 39.5mm diameter and 14mm thick case, a black dial with luminescent indexes and hands, a self-winding mechanical movement with a power reserve of over 35 hours, and a relative precision of + or – 8 seconds per day.
The dial of the chronograph is protected by a domed Hesalite crystal and has the same Arabic numerals as the original timepiece, with two registers at 3 and 9 o’clock that can count to 30 minutes. The hand-applied Super-LumiNova color has been carefully chosen to recall the luminescent material of the original Type 20. The Type 20 will be available in a stainless steel case with a black dial and two strap choices, black leather and cognac suede. A contemporary Type 20 Brown Limited Edition will also be available combining a stainless steel case with a chocolate brown dial and strap. Airain is accepting pre-orders for the Type 20 Re-Edition now for the first batch to be delivered in July of 2021.
