For 2021, BMW decided to give their 5 Series lineup a little tune up. It’s not a redesign, but more of an update. Most noticeable is the exterior look of the 2021 BMW 5 Series. The front end now sports a new set of adaptive LED headlights featuring L shaped daytime running lights (DRL). Walk towards the back of the German saloon and you’ll see that the 2021 BMW 5 Series now has trapezoid shaped exhaust tips and new taillights.
The biggest change under the hood for the 2021 BMW 5 Series is the introduction of a mild hybrid system. This is a 48 volt starter that doubles as a generator to improve fuel efficiency and performance. The easiest way to explain this is to imagine bench pressing weights at the gym. The mild hybrid system works like a spotter helping the engine during the critical moments of lifting the heavy weight, aka the car.
This hybrid system will be featured in all six cylinder 5 Series models. Those in the U.S. looking up at the peak of the 5 Series line up will be pleased to see an updated engine for the 550i xDrive. It will be powered by a twin turbo 4.4-liter with 523 horsepower. The 2021 BMW 550i xDrive will be capable of hitting 60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds. Pricing for the updated 2021 BMW 5 Series is set to start at $54k for the U.S. market.
