Since its inception, Audi’s S Series has combined performance engineering with luxurious design for all models across its range. Audi will expand that series by bringing those enhancements to its four-door full-sized sedan. The company’s announcement of the 2020 Audi S8 showcases the new dimensions brought to the fifth generation A8 that has been on the market for the last 2 years.

The S8’s twin-turbocharged 4-liter V-8 engine powers the 563-horsepower sedan. An 8-speed automatic transmission channels 590 lb-ft of torque into the luxury model’s rear-wheel drive. Additionally, the S8 couples that raw power with energy efficiency with its standard option 48-volt hybrid system. The impact of that increased performance is apparent when compared to the A8’s turbocharged V6 engine that only offers 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Another enhanced design feature that separates the S8 from the A8 is its revamped sport differential suspension. Electromechanical actuators at each corner allow the S8 to actively adjust to terrain. The forthcoming US version of the S8 will be built upon a long-wheelbase that allows the car to tilt its body around to take sharp corners and conquer even the most serpentine roads. The enhancements brought to the suspension keep the comfort of the S8 on par with that of the smooth riding A8, even at top speeds of 155 mph.

Stylistically, the S8 is nearly indistinguishable from the A8. Subtle changes to the lower front bumper and side stills do provide a more sporty look that simply accentuates the car’s eloquent exterior instead of bringing any radical changes to its design. While Audi has yet to announce its pricing for the 2020 S8 it has stated the newest addition to its S Series will be available in late 2019.
