Bring a Trailer is offering Porsche and vintage racer fans a 1966 Porsche 906. This is one of an estimated 50 built throughout a one-year production for the FIA Group 4 series. This particular car, chassis 906-127, was initially purchased by hill-climb racing champion Joseph “Sepp” Greger. Decades later, Sepp would be reunited with the Porsche 906 when he was asked to consult during the car’s restoration in the early 2000s.
In its heyday, chassis 906-127 earned class victories in 12 out of 14 European Hill Climb Championships with Sepp until he sold it in 1968. It suffered a crash in 1971, where its bodywork was reconfigured into a spider and sold again to compete in Macau road races, including the 1973 Macau Grand Prix. By 1978, the Porsche 906 was imported to the United States and was taken apart in the 1980s.
The car remained dismantled and passed through four different owners before finally being restored in 2003. The pros at Gunnar Racing were commissioned to bring the 906 back to life, which took three years to finish. During the restoration, the fiberglass bodywork was returned back to its original coupe configuration and repainted in signal red.
The 2.3-liter flat-six Type 901/06 engine, while not the original, is period correct and only one digit away from the original. It features a set of triple-throat Weber carburetors and a sand-cast aluminum engine case with a five-speed manual transaxle.
Inside, the cockpit features a custom cabin cooling system with fiberglass bucket seats equipped with a six-point harness, an intercom system, and dressed in red basketweave vinyl upholstery. There’s even a MONO Manza steering wheel. At the time of publication, four days are left on the Bring a Trailer auction with a standing bid of $865,000.
