Made by hand by the independent watchmaker Grönefeld, the original open dial Grönefeld 1941 Remontoire hit the luxury watch market in 2016 and gained immediate and widespread acclaim, even winning the Men’s Watch Award at that year’s Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. HODINKEE’s Ben Clymer was so impressed by this watch that he talked to the watchmakers Bart and Tim Grönefeld about releasing a HODINKEE exclusive version.
The resulting model features a closed dial and some small changes that took months of engineering and a total redesign of the internal movement. Hidden behind the simple time-only dial of the watch is a remarkable movement that features a remontoire d’egalite, which delivers constant power to the escapement through a secondary wheel, making this one of the most complex time-only watches in the world.
With a production run of only 12 units, the Grönefeld 1941 Remontoire Limited Edition for HODINKEE is a beautiful work of art. The watch features a salmon dial, 39.5mm stainless steel case, and AR-coated domed sapphire on both sides, and comes with a blue alligator strap, a HODINKEE Reid Goatskin Strap, Grönefeld presentation box, and a HODINKEE carrying case.
