The Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen, also known as the G-Class, is a capable off-roader that’s been around nearly unchanged since 1979. The Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet is Mercedes’ last hurrah before the G-Class is replaced with a new model, albeit with a vehicle that carries on this generation’s boxy form language.
Based on the massive and imposing underpinnings first seen on the G63 AMG 6×6, the Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet is an SUV that demands to be reckoned with. It’s the fifth model to get the Maybach treatment since the uber luxury brand has been rebranded as a luxury division for Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
Motivating this gargantuan open-top vehicle is AMG’s 6.0-liter V12 that produces 630 hp and 738 ft-lbs of torque. Sending that immense power to the ground are a set of huge 325/55 R22 wheels that also aid in elevating the vehicle 450 mm off the ground. As already apparent by the word Landaulet in the name, this is a convertible SUV, with a retractable fabric top covering the rear half of the vehicle. When open, it creates an open top oasis for its occupants cocooned in luxury, with the same levels of luxury found on the S-Class, while the driver navigates through the roughest terrains on the planet with effortless ease.
The Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet is set to officially debut at this years Geneva Motor Show in March.
