Volkswagen has unveiled the production design of the new ID. Buzz. This new electric van is a retro-inspired call back to the generation denying Volkswagen Type 2 Microbus. The Volkswagen ID. Buzz will go on sale in Europe in late 2022 and arrive in the US market as a 2024 model in 2023. Volkswagen announced that two models will be available in Europe: a cargo variant for commercial use and a passenger van. However, Americans will only see the long-wheelbase passenger variant. But, Volkswagen did mention the US-spec ID. Buzz would cater to American buyers with unique variants like the teased California camper edition.

The new Volkswagen ID. Buzz features a rear-mounted 150-kW electric motor powering a 77-kWh battery pack to produce 201-hp and 229 lb.-ft of torque as a rear-wheel-drive vehicle. Moreover, a dual-motor with all-wheel drive increases total power output to 295-hp. The battery range is expected to be within the 260-mile benchmark. The electric van’s platform uses Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive (MED), currently being used for the Audi E-Tron and VW ID. 4 crossover.

Press release photos of the VW ID. Buzz electric passenger van shows a welcoming, colorful interior. Volkswagen claims the ID. Buzz’s interior upholstery is 100 percent animal-free. The steering wheel, for example, is made from polyurethane to resemble the feel of leather. In addition, recycled materials such as marine plastic are used to construct the ID. Buzz’s seat and flooring covers and headliner. Europe may see the new Volkswagen ID. Buzz by the fall of this year. However, for those of us living across the pond, the US reveal of the electric microbus won’t be until 2023.
