Regardless of whatever feelings you have about that volleyball scene, the legacy of Tony Scott’s Top Gun is undeniable. From making Kenny Loggins a household name to the countless films that have referenced the 1986 hit in both spoofs and homages, the impact Top Gun had on pop culture still resonates today. Since its release 33 years ago, the film has been an inseparable part of the enduring star power of Tom Cruise. The leading man reprises his role as Captain Peter “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick.
The newly-released trailer for the film contains everything that you might want from a Top Gun sequel: a grizzled older Maverick who has refused to abandon his hotshot ways, tense military drama, and the legacy of Goose carried on by his son, Bradley, who hopes to follow in his father’s footsteps.
But the real draw here is the incredible cinematography and special effects that capture Maverick’s jaw-dropping flight maneuvers. According to Cruise’s co-star John Hamm, the full action sequences promise to exceed the expectations of even the most excited fans. In a recent interview with the online publication Collider, Hamm called Top Gun: Maverick’s aerial footage “mind-blowing.”
The film is set for release on June 26, 2020.
