The wait is over for fans of the Matrix. With today’s release of The Matrix Resurrections Official Trailer, we’re given a peek into the fourth installment of the franchise set to release in theaters and HBO Max this December 22nd, so buckle up, it’s going to be quite a ride. The film is written and directed by Lana Wachowski, who directed the original trilogy that began in 1999, alongside her sister Lily Wachowski. The trailer shows Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity and gives us hints about what the duo have been up to since 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions.
Quite fittingly, the music running through the trailer is Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” and as the trailer reveals, Neo, likely due to the blue pills he’s ingesting daily, has all but forgotten his past life as the savior of humanity, with only vague dreams reminding him of who he was. While Neo was killed at the end of The Matrix Revolutions, his body was carried off by the machines, while the Oracle mentions in the final scene, that she believes they will see Neo again. The door for his return was left open, so it will be interesting to see if The Matrix Resurrections uses those plot threads from the much-maligned third film.
In the trailer, we meet Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a Morpheus-like character offering Neo an exit from the Matrix, Priyanka Chopra Jonas offering Neo a copy of Alice in Wonderland, Jessica Henwick fighting furiously and guiding Neo, Jonathan Groff having a chat, and a therapist played by Neil Patrick Harris. Suffice it to say that one simply must see this trailer in order to understand why it is so difficult to describe.
