Sony’s α7R II was already a celebrated Sony camera that earned positive feedback and reviews for pushing mirrorless cameras to new, ground-breaking heights.

With their latest Alpha model, the Sony α7R III, Sony’s improvements are focused toward keeping what worked for the previous generation while implementing new, state of the art features.

Regarding what Sony left untouched, the Sony α7R III keeps its predecessor’s high-resolution and high-end 42.4MP sensor, but its performance has been improved thanks to improved readout circuitry and rolling shutter improvements. The new model also boasts 425 contrast-detect points for the camera’s hybrid autofocus, which is a tangible upgrade from the previous model’s 399 phase-detect points.

Gapless microlenses and a new anti-flare coating provide additional value, while the readout speed of the camera’s sensor is now nearly twice as fast and processing speeds receive a significant boost thanks to the new BIONZ X image processing engine. The improved processing engine also ought to improve the camera’s handling of image noise.

And, for photographers on the cutting edge of HDR, the new camera also features HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) support that lets HLG-compatible televisions with HDR play back 4K HDR footage.

All these improvements and many more come in a sleek package that is only slightly thicker than the previous generation α7R II. The slightly thicker body also comes with new functionality such as an additional custom button and an improved rear scrollwheel.

Sony’s improvements to an already exemplary mirrorless camera should have DSLR competitors looking over their shoulder as Sony’s high-resolution, high-performance camera seeks to convert more photographers to mirrorless with this desirable camera.
