The portable speaker market is crowded with small cylinders and bulbous boxes, but Sonos has taken a different route with its new Play. Sitting between the Roam 2 and the Move 2, the Play combines a compact footprint with serious endurance.

A slender chassis less than eight inches long houses two angled tweeters and a mid‑woofer that create a surprisingly spacious soundstage. The 24‑hour battery can even be replaced when it finally wears out, and the speaker doubles as a power bank for your phone in a pinch.

Durability is another highlight. The Play carries an IP67 rating, meaning it can survive a dunk in the pool as easily as a dusty campsite. The body is made from recycled plastic with a soft‑touch finish, and a discreet handle makes it easy to loop the speaker onto a backpack or hang it on a branch. Sonos’s class‑H amplifier and custom tuning deliver a clean, articulate sound whether it’s streaming over Wi‑Fi 6 or Bluetooth 5.3. When connected to a home network, the Play supports AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect, and it can link up with up to four other Play or Move 2 speakers for a truly portable surround setup.

While the Play’s design emphasises simplicity, it hasn’t forgotten practicality. The top panel features capacitive controls for playback and volume, while a USB‑C port hides beneath a waterproof hatch. The speaker will ship at the end of March for $299. For those who prize both mobility and fidelity, Sonos has finally delivered a portable system that feels considered rather than compromised.
