Shinola Gives the Duck an Automatic Upgrade

The 38mm sport watch trades quartz for Miyota automatic movements, textured dials, and up to 80 hours of reserve.

Shinola has turned one of its most playful sport watches into a mechanical proposition. The Shinola Duck Automatic keeps the compact, water-ready character of the quartz Duck but moves to Japanese automatic power, giving the Detroit brand a more enthusiast-oriented entry point without abandoning the model’s casual personality.

The 38mm case remains sized for everyday wear and carries a 10 ATM water-resistance rating, making the Duck useful beyond the desk. Shinola offers two movement configurations. Most versions use the Miyota 9015, a 24-jewel automatic with roughly 42 hours of power reserve. A higher-spec version steps up to the Miyota 9085 Premium, extending reserve to approximately 80 hours. Both movements are visible through exhibition casebacks, where a custom rotor is signed and ringed in canary-yellow enamel.

The dial work gives the update its visual identity. New Hydro and Plume textures reference water rolling from a duck’s back and the layered structure of feathers rather than relying on a simple color swap. Bracelet and rubber-strap options reinforce the watch’s sport-watch brief. It is also a notable shift for Shinola: the company describes these as its first watches powered by Japanese movements, broadening a mechanical catalog previously associated with Swiss calibers.

That combination makes the Duck Automatic more consequential than a routine movement change. It brings mechanical ownership to one of Shinola’s most approachable designs while retaining the 38mm proportions and water resistance that made the original easy to wear.

Compared with Shinola’s more overtly technical Monster GMT, the Duck occupies a smaller, lighter, less formal lane. The collection is available now through Shinola, with pricing varying by movement, strap, and finish.
