Seagate’s Ultra Compact SSD is here to challenge the thumb drive’s reign in the portable storage space. With its sleek aluminum shell and USB-C connectivity, it’s about as small as they come—measuring just 2.7 x 0.7 x 0.34 inches, making it easy to throw into any pocket or bag. But while this tiny powerhouse boasts up to 2TB of storage, it’s not all smooth sailing when it comes to performance.

Despite its compact design, the SSD’s read and write speeds fall short of competitors in the same category. Its sequential read and write speeds top out at 1,000 Mbps, and its write speed of 512 Mbps places it behind other more capable drives on the market, though it still offers solid performance for everyday tasks.

The drive is built to last, with IP54 dust and water resistance, and can handle drops of up to three meters. Seagate has sustainability in mind, using up to 35% recycled materials in its construction. One major perk is the Seagate Rescue Data Recovery service, which provides backup and recovery for up to three years—a nice touch for anyone worried about data loss.
The Ultra Compact SSD is a solid option for users looking for something portable and durable, but the price tag—$115 for the 1TB version and $180 for 2TB—might make you think twice compared to other options. Still, if you’re after a sleek, everyday drive that can survive a little rough handling, this SSD does the job.
