Retro Designs’ latest restomod shows how far a vintage Mercedes can be pushed while retaining its dignified silhouette. The North Carolina firm is known for custom hot rods and bespoke classic builds, and this one‑off 1969 Mercedes‑Benz 280 SE coupe proves the point.

The donor W108 shell now sits atop a reinforced chassis and houses a 5.4‑liter AMG M113 V8 producing around 640 horsepower. Power runs through a five‑speed automatic to the rear wheels via a strengthened differential and Brembo disc brakes at each corner. Custom Evod billet wheels tuck under widened fenders, and the body wears deep Irish Green paint inspired by Porsche hues.

Inside, the builders preserved the original dashboard lines but fitted modern digital gauges, an integrated JL Audio head unit and Vintage Air HVAC. Brown leather upholstery and square‑weave carpeting contrast against polished wood trim.

As with other restomod builds, there’s no official Mercedes badging — just a discreet Retro Designs script on the trunk. Limited to a single commission, this project commands a reported $500,000 price tag, placing it among the most exclusive restomods on the market. Enthusiasts who follow restomod projects will appreciate how this build blends heritage styling with contemporary power and comfort while maintaining period‑correct proportions.
