Generally, the mechanical watch industry is a slow moving one, with many prestigious brands sticking to their century-old traditions and making only incremental, conservative steps. But then you have companies like Ressence.
Last year, Ressence unveiled the concept version of this watch. The actual product basically features the exact same specs as the concept. The first mechanical watch to feature a smart crown, the Ressence Type 2 and other Ressence e-Crown designs can do things that other mechanical watches cannot, like automatically adjusting to different time zones, for instance. Before the watch winds down, it enters a power save mode. To bring it back to life even after several months, all you have to do is simply tap on its crystal dome. The Type 2 does this by fitting a mechanical movement with an electronic e-Crown module that operates independently yet regulates the mechanical parts.
Of course, the issue here is the horrific 1ATM water resistance in spite of its sporty design. Oh, and the price tag of nearly $50K.
