2019 is a special year for Omega as it is for Junghans (celebrating 100 years of bauhaus with its popular Max Bill series). Especially when Omega releases special editions left and right, commemorating everything from hashtags and Ultraman to watch blogs. Honestly, you didn’t think Omega would pass this one up, did you?
The Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary is similar to the original special edition gold Speedmasters that were given to the Apollo 11 astronauts back in 1969 after their return (not the version used during the mission). Marking the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and announced on the heels of the SpaceX Dragon’s triumphant return to Earth, the Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary comes in an all-new alloy named Moonshine gold.
The watch’s striking onyx hour markers contrasts brilliantly with the Moonshine gold dial, and the burgundy ceramic bezel gives the watch a delightful “old-timey feel.” The watch features a Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 hand-wound movement, which can be seen from the display case back. Also adorning the inlays of the case back, you’ll see a picture of Earth on the right side, and the moon on the left, taken from an actual lunar meteorite. The Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary is antimagnetic to 15,000 gauss and is limited to 1,014.
