French microbrand MU:N has built its identity around moonphase watches, and the new Nuit des Étoiles pushes that fascination with lunar timekeeping into more ambitious territory. Created in partnership with the French Astronomy Association for the 2026 Nuits des Étoiles event, the limited-edition watch connects horology with the annual celebration of night-sky observation held across France.

The watch is built around a 38mm 316L stainless steel case measuring 11.6mm thick, with 10 ATM water resistance and a double-domed sapphire crystal. Its proportions keep the piece wearable while leaving enough visual space for the dial’s central feature: an enlarged moon disc that dominates the composition. Rather than treating the moonphase as a small aperture tucked into the dial, MU:N makes the celestial display the architectural centerpiece of the watch.

That moon disc is more than decorative. It is based on a map of the sky from the first Nuits des Étoiles event in 1991, reproduced with extreme precision. The moon itself is fully luminescent with Swiss Super-LumiNova BGW9, while deeper engraving allows first-magnitude stars to glow at night with varying intensity. MU:N uses femtosecond laser work to carve and burn the surface at microscopic scale, giving the craters visible relief and creating a dial that changes significantly between daylight and darkness.

The dial construction adds to that sense of depth. MU:N uses a three-level layout, combining a cold enamel-finished outer section, a transparent inner disc, and the central moon positioned below the main dial. The result is a layered display that appears suspended beneath the crystal. A flying seconds hand moves around the moon like a satellite in orbit, reinforcing the watch’s astronomical theme without turning it into a novelty piece.

Inside is MU:N’s modified Sellita SW288-1M, a Swiss hand-wound movement reworked to accommodate the enlarged moon display. The caliber offers a 41-hour power reserve, runs at 4Hz, and is adjusted to a stated accuracy of +/-7 seconds per day. The movement also tracks the 29.5-day lunar cycle, keeping the watch’s mechanical purpose aligned with its visual identity.

The Nuit des Étoiles is limited to 300 numbered pieces, with pre-orders opening June 22, 2026. MU:N lists the watch at €1,490, with the first 200 pieces scheduled for delivery in September 2026 and the remaining 100 pieces following in December. For collectors drawn to independent watchmaking, astronomy, and mechanically expressive dial design, the Nuit des Étoiles offers a poetic interpretation of the moonphase complication while remaining grounded in serious Swiss-made execution.
