When the Kindle first burst onto the scene in 2007, bibliophiles the world over rejoiced for the ability to pack volumes of their favorite books onto a single, portable device. In the decade since Amazon’s crafty little device has enjoyed multiple iterations to bring the joy of the written word to readers. With the release of the second generation Kindle Oasis, Amazon looks to improve on its most famous product.

The new Kindle boasts the largest, highest resolution display to date with a seven-inch 300 ppi screen. This means that the device can now handle 30 percent more words per page, reducing the amount of turns needed. Its laser-quality text appears just like real paper, without a glare even in vibrant sunlight. With a new adaptive front light, it intuitively adjusts the brightness of its display according to your surroundings, whether a dimly lit room or outside in the sun.

Despite the increase, the Oasis is still light as paper with its ultrathin 3.4mm display covered with a lightweight glass and featuring an anodized aluminum back. For the ultimate in portability, the device is now waterproof up to two meters for the first time, so you can confidently enjoy your beach reads without worrying about damage.

The Oasis operates on weeks of battery power, which is helpful considering that Amazon has bumped up its storage capacity, offering 8 GB or 32 GB models to accommodate even more titles. With the inclusion of Audible on the device you can not only read but also listen to your favorite audiobooks as well.
