Casio’s premium MR‑G collection often pushes the boundaries of watchmaking, but the new MRG‑B2000KT goes a step further by commissioning a master metalsmith to carve a mythical creature into its bezel. Inspired by the kurogane‑tsuba iron guard of a samurai sword, the titanium bezel is hand‑engraved with a phoenix motif by Kobayashi Masao, a third‑generation artisan from Otsu. The bas‑relief design, executed using the traditional shishiai‑bori technique, depicts the phoenix’s head and tail on opposite sides and is coated in a dark blue‑green kurogane‑iro DLC finish. No two bezels are exactly alike, making each watch a unique sculpture.

The rest of the watch is equally ornate. The solid titanium case features a crystallized surface pattern created by heat treatment and receives a coppery brown AIP coating reminiscent of sword fittings. Emerald‑inlaid screws add a flash of color that complements the green rubber Dura Soft strap, while the dial uses red‑to‑orange vapor deposition to evoke phoenix feathers.

Beneath the artistry lies a full suite of G‑Shock technology: Tough Solar movement keeps the watch running on light, and Bluetooth and radio‑controlled timekeeping ensure accuracy. The Clad Guard structure protects the crown and buttons without sacrificing operability.

Limited to just 800 pieces worldwide, the MRG‑B2000KT is priced at around US$8,000. Its combination of high art and high tech echoes the appeal of other MR‑G models, such as the MRG‑B2100.
For enthusiasts who appreciate Japanese craftsmanship as much as shock resistance, this phoenix‑engraved G‑Shock offers a compelling way to wear a piece of sculpture on the wrist.
