Brooklyn’s Grado Labs has long been synonymous with open‑back headphones carved from exotic woods, and the new Signature S550 makes that pedigree a bit more approachable. At $995, it is the least expensive entry in the company’s Signature line but retains the hand‑crafted quality and family‑run ethos that have attracted audiophiles for decades.

The S550 uses housings made from Brazilian walnut, each piece selected for its unique grain. Inside those cups, Grado’s 50 mm S2 dynamic driver has been tuned for a warmer, slightly more forgiving sound than the sharper voicing of the company’s classic models. The frequency response stretches from 6 Hz to 44 kHz, and total harmonic distortion stays below 0.2 percent even at 100 dB.

Comfort is improved over previous Grado designs thanks to the inclusion of plush B cushions that follow the contours of the outer ear. The headphones weigh 335 grams and arrive with a 1.8 meter detachable cable using mini‑XLR connectors; an adapter to ¼‑inch is included. Grado still assembles each pair by hand in Brooklyn, and the cable’s 12‑conductor geometry promises low resistance and excellent channel separation. Unlike many competitors, the S550 intentionally eschews noise cancelling or Bluetooth to focus on pure analog reproduction.

Shipping later this month, the S550 will debut at the CanJam NYC show. While the price is steep compared to mass‑market alternatives, the combination of natural materials, careful tuning and heirloom build quality ensures the S550 stands apart from commodity headphones. For those seeking a more intimate Grado signature with a bit of warmth, this may be the sweet spot.
