Dan Levy is an accomplished actor descended from comedy royalty. His dad is Eugene Levy, who is famous for such blockbuster comedies as Splash, American Pie, and the hit show, Schitt’s Creek, which he created with his son. It was Schitt’s Creek that pushed the younger Levy into the spotlight and made him a household name. In the sixth and final season of the show, he swept the Primetime Emmy Awards, winning awards for best producer, director, writer, and actor, the first man to sweep these categories in one year.

His character, David Rose, on the show was known for his bold, urban, brooding sweater collection with a fashion sense that stuck out like a sore thumb in the small town where the show was set. Dan’s fashion choices also delight in real life in his many award show appearances and on red carpets at premieres on both coasts in New York and Los Angeles.

Dan started his career as an MTV VJ on the channel in Canada, where he was raised. He also appeared on Degrassi Goes Hollywood and had a small part in the movie, Admission with Tina Fey and Steve Carell. But, as we mentioned, it was his turn on Schitt’s Creek, which also starred his sister, Sarah Levy, that launched him to stardom. The quirky, yet very endearing show continues to be a favorite on Netflix to new audiences who love the wacky family, the Roses, around whom the show is centered.

Dan Levy As David Rose

In the show, he co-stars with his dad, Catherine O’Hara, and Annie Murphy, as the son in a wealthy family that is forced to live in a rundown motel in a tiny town after they lose their fortune. It’s a hilarious look at a fish out of water family trying to make it in Schitt’s Creek, a crazy backwater town of unforgettable characters. The fashion looks Dan’s character, David Rose, was known for on the show helped to make him a true style icon. He loved to wear oversized black sweaters from luxury brands like Rick Owns and Alexander McQueen with gothic couture pants.

In one memorable scene, David escapes to a Mennonite farm and is seen helping a woman in the field while wearing a Helmut Lang black mohawk hoodie and designer sunglasses. In an interview for Vogue in 2018, Dan said that he took a month to pick out this particular look for his character.

Another signature David Rose look was drop-crotch pants. These harem or buddha-style pants worked very well with a vast collection of fuzzy designer sweaters. And he wasn’t afraid to wear a kilt, which he did with an oversized white shirt and distressed black sweater. The kilt made a reappearance later on in the show, in a very important and touching moment.

When it came to shoes, he usually kept it fairly simple in chunky black combat boots, or Chuck Taylors. He accessorized with silver cuff rings and designer sunglasses. The whole look was a winning combination that a ton of people are now trying to emulate in real life. The fashion was just that good on the show.

A Bold Style That Stands Out for Award Season

Although his character’s style on the show sure stood out, so do Dan’s style choices in real life. In a recent interview for Vogue in 2021, Dan said that he likes to choose “clothes that say something.”

For the Golden Globes this year, Dan was styled by Erica Cloud in a Valentino Haute Couture ensemble that consisted of a double jacket in citrus and a sequined silk turtleneck in lime green with matching pants. The shoes were a bold shiny silver platform number from the Valentino’s Spring 2021 Couture Collection. The entire look was bright and inspired.

Since Dan wears glasses, his choices in eyewear are also important to note. He likes a chunky black frame for the most part and even owns his own eyewear brand, called D.L. Eyewear that has been around since 2013. It’s an inclusive gender-neutral line that just underwent a brand relaunch in 2020.

At the 2020 Emmys, in a nod to his “Schitt’s Creek” character, Dan wore a grey variation of the Thom Browne kilt and suit that he wore in his wedding on the show to Patrick Brewer. He completed the look with black combat boots and mismatched striped socks. This is not a look that the average actor wears to any award show, but on Dan, it was just perfect.

Another standout look was a decorative black and white military-style suit from Dior with lace-up black leather combat boots at the 2021 Critics Choice Awards. The choice in footwear seems to be a signature of his because he rocks this style of boot so often. The look was bold and landed him on quite a few best-dressed lists for the night.

No matter what Dan does on the red carpet, he rocks it with flair, attitude, and a splash of fun. That’s what makes him someone to watch in the fashion world with people talking about his looks long after the night is over.

Get His Unique Style

In order to get his style, you have to channel a little bit of Dan and a little bit of David Rose. Of course, the first way to be like Dan is through the right sweater. Alexander McQueen is a great place to start. Try this Scarf Neck Jumper in charcoal with an unconventional neckline that makes a perfect statement over traditional men’s knitwear. Or go with the McQueen Skull Camouflage Jacquard Sweater in swirls of grey and black because you can just picture Dan wearing this with black pants and combat boots.

Dan loves tailored statement-making suits in bold colors that surprise the eye. You can’t go with basics on this, you have to think outside-the-box a bit. In dressed-up award show appearances, Dan usually likes a tie over a tuxedo-style bowtie. So pick out a suit that has a regular tie, but start with this green Gucci GG Canvas Jacket and matching pants. It has some navy piping around the edges that is exactly like some of the extra detailing that Dan likes in his formal wear.

You need two different pairs of shoes in your closet that Dan would own. A combat boot and a black sneaker. Celine’s Lace-Up Boot in Calfskin Black is perfect. Wear them with jeans, suits, or even a stylish designer kilt from Thom Browne, if you dare. And you really should. It’s a look that will get you noticed.

Finally, the one accessory that Dan doesn’t leave home with is his signature glasses. You might as well buy a stylish pair from the company that he owns. D.L. Eyewear’s Roxborough in black is pretty much the exact frame that Dan wears most of the time. It’s a 60s inspired frame that is as the company calls it, a “contemporary spin on a classic idea and Dan’s go-to shape.

Although Schitt’s Creek is over, all the style choices from Dan’s famous character, David Rose, will live on. With Dan’s star continuing to rise, we will surely see him in many projects throughout the coming years and making amazing fashion choices to boot.
