August is here and although we may be in the dog days of summer, that doesn’t mean that we’re slowing down. This month is chock-full of exciting events all over the globe. Here are the ones that we’ll be keeping an eye on.

Olympic Games in Rio

August 5, 2016 – August 21, 2016

From Zika fears to construction delays to safety concerns, the lead up to the XXXI Summer Games has been interesting to say the least. On August 5th, the Opening Ceremony will kick off the Games at Rio’s Maracanã Stadium and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that everything comes together in the end. Needless to say, we’ll be watching.

Outside Lands

August 5, 2016 -August 7, 2016

The annual culinary and music festival that takes place in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park will be headlined by Radiohead and LCD Soundsystem this year. Seventy nine food vendors will be serving everything from Donut Cheeseburgers to Nepalese Dumplings to Lobster Rolls and Ramen. Those who didn’t score tickets this year can live stream the event.

Burning Man

August 28, 2016 – September 5, 2016

Love it or hate it, the annual Burning Man Festival, which takes place in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert (also known as “the playa”), has become something of a phenomenon since it began in 1986. Each year, tens of thousands of “burners” flock to Black Rock City, a temporarily constructed metropolis “dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance.” This year’s theme, Da Vinci’s Workshop, is inspired by the convergence of art and innovation that emerged during the Italian Renaissance of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival

August 5, 2016 – August 29, 2016

Each August the largest arts festival in the world takes place in Scotland’s capital. The Edinburgh Fringe Festival dates back to 1947 when eight theater groups showed up uninvited to the newly formed Edinburgh International Festival and staged their shows on the ‘Fringe of the Festival.’ Each year an increasing number of performers began showing up to perform, and in 1958 the Festival Fringe Society was created. The 2016 Fringe will feature over 3,000 unique events, so you’re sure to find something you enjoy.

Creamfields

August 25, 2016 – August 28, 2016

British EDM festival Creamfields was launched in 1998 in Winchester, Hampshire by the team behind legendary Liverpool club Cream. Less than 20 years years later the festival has expanded into almost as many cities, including Buenos Aires, Moscow, and Abu Dhabi. The 2016 edition in Daresbury, Cheshire, England, will feature some of the biggest names in electronic music, including Calvin Harris, Duke Dumont, Avicii, and Jack Ü.

La Tomatina

August 31, 2016

La Tomatina festival, essentially the world’s largest food fight, is held in the Valencian town of Buñol, Spain on the last Wednesday of August. Each year the narrow streets of the small town turn red during the hour long event in which participants from all over the world pelt each other with tomatoes purely for entertainment purposes. To make an entire day of it, you can attend the official pre-party and/or after party through La Tomatina Tours.
