Deus Ex Machina quite literally translates as “God from the machine,” appropriately the motorcycle iteration of its holy namesake incorporates touches of the divine. No more so is this more evident in the Deus Ex Machina D-Side, the latest in the brand’s Built Yard’s project in collaboration with Yamaha. The D-Side is in part a response to a desire for a three-wheeled Deus bike.

Designed on Deus’ overarching principle of constant creation motion, the company has re-imagined their XV950 model with an aerodynamic side car seat, adding a third wheel to the bike’s proportions. The XV950, with all the considerate touches of a custom bike, from the engine torque to the clean classic lines of its vintage inspired frame, providing the perfect jumping off point to tweak and innovate.

Deus began by shedding weight, incorporating lighter, less complex materials into the bike’s construction, based on the classic SR model. Given the brand’s “surf and bike” lifestyle philosophy, the added sidecar not only appropriates seating for a passenger but also includes a transport component for a surfboard.

The integrated surf rack is part of the sidecar’s system along with 19-inch wheels, part of the bike’s Firestone Delux tire components. An aluminum tank and front and rear fender mudguards, as well as a handmade rear frame, provide inspired design touches to the traditional XV950. The bike is handpainted by Kaos Design, giving it a sophisticated yet casual appearance.

An SC-Project for Deus Twocone full exhaust system and handmade air cone filter power the bike into glorious existence. A Discaacciati Brake System specially created for Deus has a six piston caliper. A Motogadget Speedometer, another new fixture on the D-Side, tracks speed. While riding is comfortable via the D-Side’s handcrafted Alcantara saddle for the driver, and Deus embroidered vintage racing seat in the sidecar for the passenger.
