Citizen is marking five decades of its solar-powered innovation with the limited-edition Citizen Eco‑Drive Photon, a watch that translates scientific theory into a tangible design object. Its most compelling feature is the layered dial construction, where a structural color film rests above a black base and shifts between green and purple depending on the angle of light.

The effect draws directly from the double-slit experiment, visualizing light’s dual nature as both wave and particle. A curved metal plate punctuated by two slits sits above the film, while a subtly tinted sapphire crystal completes the composition, creating a dial that changes character with every movement of the wrist.

The case measures 39.6 mm and is crafted from Citizen’s proprietary Super Titanium, resulting in a watch that weighs just 70 grams while maintaining 100 meters of water resistance. The material is treated with the brand’s Duratect coating, improving surface hardness and resistance to everyday wear. The proportions remain restrained, allowing the dial’s visual complexity to take center stage without overwhelming the overall silhouette.

Powering the watch is the new Eco-Drive Caliber E036, a light-driven movement capable of running for up to 365 days on a full charge. Accuracy is rated at ±15 seconds per month, and as with all Eco-Drive models, the system eliminates the need for routine battery replacements. It is a technical foundation that reinforces the Photon’s conceptual narrative—precision powered by light itself.

Two variants will be released in the fall: the silver-toned BJ6560-53W and the black-and-gold BJ6569-59X. Each is limited to 5,000 pieces, priced at $995 and $1,195 respectively. By combining optical physics with lightweight engineering, the Eco-Drive Photon positions itself as both a commemorative piece and a quietly provocative study in how science can inform watch design without sacrificing everyday usability.
