Bruichladdich Makes Its Barley the Headliner

Greener Still blends three traceable barley programs into a 15-year, bourbon-cask Islay malt.

Bruichladdich Greener Still turns the distillery’s 25th-anniversary release toward the field rather than the cask. The 15-year-old, unpeated Islay single malt combines three distinct barley parcels to examine how grain variety and farming methods influence the finished whisky.

The blend draws on Organic barley from the Scottish mainland, Biodynamic barley cultivated on a carbon-positive farm in Wiltshire, England, and Bere, an ancient six-row landrace grown in Orkney. Bruichladdich has worked with Organic barley since 2003 and Bere since 2005, while its Biodynamic program produced its first Scotch release in 2021.

Every component matured entirely in first-fill bourbon barrels at the distillery on Islay. That consistent cask treatment keeps the emphasis on differences in texture, spice, fruit, and malt character rather than layering the spirit with multiple wood finishes. Bottled at 51.6% ABV, Greener Still is non-chill-filtered and contains no added coloring.

The profile opens with soft florals before moving through ripe orchard fruit and honeyed sweetness. Vanilla and coastal freshness shape a velvety finish without introducing the peat smoke commonly associated with Islay whisky. That structure places it well apart from the sherry-led richness of a recent single-malt release and keeps the emphasis on raw material and provenance.

Greener Still becomes the fourth release in Bruichladdich’s Still Series, following three cask-focused expressions issued between 2006 and 2008. The 700ml limited release debuted at £120 and is currently sold out through Bruichladdich’s UK and U.S. storefronts. The distillery has not published U.S. pricing or production numbers.
