With the introduction of the Apple Watch, the mainstream market seems to slowly warm to the idea of wearable tech. The growing suite of apps are expanding the functionality of these wearables, exponentially increasing its potential. However, some are still unconvinced of the benefits of putting a smart device on your wrist, since the required smart phone features a more robust and powerful hardware to support more sophisticated apps.

BLOCKS sets to change all that my making the smart watch truly customizable from the hardware level. While the ‘Core’ houses the main features that you would normally expect from a smart watch, each ‘Module’ that makes up a link in the band has their own unique function. Depending on the needs of the user, the links can be interchanged to add features like GPS, gesture control, heart rate monitor, extra battery, NFC, and so on. The open platform also allows developers and other companies to add their own modules, so the possibilities are endless in terms of what each module can be. Currently BLOCKS is compatible with both iOS and Android, but if the user chooses to use the sim module, a paired phone becomes necessary freeing up the need to carry a phone completely.

The less than eye-catching design might be the BLOCKS weakest point, but with a strong and simple concept that emphasizes individuality and customization that has been lacking in the smart watch sector, we’re sure that it will carry momentum like it already has on Kickstarter.
