Anniversary dive watches often grow louder as they look backward. The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe 70th Anniversary follows a subtler archival path, returning to the compact proportions and sparse geometry of a 1968 Bathyscaphe.

Limited to 300 numbered pieces, reference 5903 1110 063A marks 70 years since Blancpain introduced the civilian-oriented Bathyscaphe in 1956. Its stainless-steel case measures 37.4mm across, 12.3mm thick, and 46.5mm lug to lug—a deliberate contrast to the 43mm cases and material experimentation of recent ceramic Bathyscaphe models.

A box-shaped sapphire crystal rises above a narrow, unidirectional steel bezel fitted with a black ceramic insert. The sunburst meteor-gray dial uses period Blancpain typography, baton markers and hands in 18-karat white gold, vintage-toned Super-LumiNova, and a trapezoidal date window at 3 o’clock. A hand-stitched chocolate calfskin strap reinforces the late-1960s character, although 300 meters of water resistance keeps the watch more than historically decorative.

Visible through the sapphire caseback, the automatic caliber 1150—also used in the smaller 38mm Bathyscaphe—combines twin barrels with a silicon hairspring for a 100-hour power reserve. Its openworked 18-karat gold rotor echoes early Fifty Fathoms winding weights and carries the individual edition number.

Blancpain prices the Bathyscaphe 70th Anniversary at $18,300. Each of the 300 examples is delivered in a protective Peli case; U.S. sales run through Blancpain boutiques and its online store, with stock varying by market.
