Knifemakers have long chased a mythical blade that’s both hard enough to hold an edge and tough enough to pry without snapping. Benchmade’s new Codex87 Horizon Edge takes a radical shot at that problem by literally combining two steels into a single cutting edge.

Rather than relying on laminations across the entire blade, Benchmade uses a precise laser‑fusion process to apply a strip of ultra‑hard CPM Rex 121 along the cutting surface of a Hakkapella Damasteel blade. The result is a bi‑metal edge with distinct zones: one engineered for razor‑sharp slicing and the other built for durability.

Based on the company’s Saddle Mountain Skinner platform, the Codex87 features a full‑tang design and a hand‑filling laminated wood handle. The unique blade construction allows the main body of the knife to retain Damasteel’s toughness for field dressing and heavy tasks, while the Rex 121 edge provides incredible wear resistance for extended use.

According to Benchmade, the laser‑bonding process creates a seamless transition between the materials without the weaknesses associated with traditional welds or forge welds. The knife carries the company’s signature style cues with a droppoint profile and an integrated finger guard; specifications like blade length, thickness and weight are expected to mirror the Saddle Mountain Skinner.

Benchmade hasn’t announced pricing or availability yet, but it unveiled the Codex87 at SHOT Show 2026 as a showcase of its SelectEdge technology and innovation. For hunters and outdoor enthusiasts who usually juggle a skinning blade and a tougher tool, the Codex87 promises to be a one‑knife solution.
