Apple rarely leaves a successful product unchanged, and the AirTag is no exception. The company’s second‑generation tracker looks almost identical to the disc introduced in 2021, but inside it packs a new ultra‑wideband chip and a louder speaker designed to make misplaced items easier to find.

Apple says the Bluetooth range is now 50 percent greater, and the built‑in speaker is up to 50 percent louder; those improvements should help if your keys have slipped between couch cushions or your luggage is buried under a pile of suitcases.

The updated AirTag also supports more precise navigation thanks to the same UWB chipset used in the iPhone 17 family. When paired with a compatible phone, Precision Finding overlays directional arrows and distance markers on the screen, guiding you to within a few inches of the tag.

Apple has added a Share Item Location feature so you can temporarily grant a family member or friend access to a tag’s coordinates without giving up ownership. The new AirTag remains water‑ and dust‑resistant and uses a replaceable CR2032 battery.

Pricing is unchanged at $29 for a single tag or $99 for a four‑pack. The second‑generation AirTag ships later this spring, and Apple notes that it will still work with accessories designed for the original tracker. For context on how the AirTag began, see our coverage of the original AirTag.

As wearables and smart devices proliferate, a more powerful tracker is a logical evolution — and the ability to silently hand off its location data to a friend might be the feature that makes sure your borrowed suitcase actually finds its way home.
