Altra built its reputation on zero-drop geometry. The Vanish Carbon 3 bends that rule with a 4mm heel-to-toe offset, giving the brand’s flagship road racer a more conventional stance in pursuit of efficient propulsion.

Its all-new FAST RCE midsole sandwiches a patent-pending split-toe carbon plate between two pieces of supercritical PEBA foam. The plate supplies the rigidity expected from a contemporary racing shoe while allowing the big toe to engage more freely during push-off. Stack height measures 40mm at the heel and 36mm at the forefoot, while the men’s version weighs a claimed 7.7 ounces.

Altra’s Racing FootShape last retains room for the toes while fitting more closely around the heel and midfoot than its Standard and Original profiles. A seamless engineered-mesh upper, lightweight tongue, and new eyestay arrangement reinforce that hold without abandoning the brand’s characteristic forefoot space. Among familiar carbon-plated racing shoes, the split plate gives the Vanish Carbon 3 a functional point of distinction rather than a cosmetic one.

The move away from the previous model’s 0mm drop may divide Altra loyalists, but the underlying design still favors toe engagement and natural movement. The Altra Vanish family offers the Vanish Carbon 3 in three colors, with men’s and women’s versions available for $240.
