The latest generation of Apple’s over‑ear headphones refines nearly every aspect of the original. The new AirPods Max 2 uses redesigned drivers and a high‑dynamic‑range amplifier to support 24‑bit, 48 kHz lossless audio over USB‑C. A new noise‑cancelling chipset promises up to 1.5 times better active noise cancellation, while Adaptive Audio smartly blends noise‑cancellation and transparency modes so that listeners can remain aware of their surroundings when they choose.

The headphones also gain Conversation Awareness, automatically lowering volume and focusing on voices when the user starts speaking, and Voice Isolation for clearer calls. Live Translation uses on‑device processing to translate speech in real time, and an updated camera remote lets the headphones serve as a discreet shutter release during photography sessions.

Apple has also worked to make the AirPods Max 2 more sustainable by using recycled aluminum and rare‑earth elements in the headband and earcups. A new breathable mesh canopy and memory‑foam cushions improve comfort, and the earcups now swivel more freely to fit a wider range of heads.

The headphones are offered in a palette of midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue finishes. With USB‑C charging and up to 30 hours of battery life, the headphones support quick charging that delivers an hour and a half of playback with a five‑minute charge. Apple says the headphones are designed to work seamlessly across its ecosystem, enabling features like personalized spatial audio and on‑head detection.

Preorders begin next week at $549, with shipments starting March 25. Given the price and the feature set, the Adaptive Audio and lossless audio capabilities make these headphones aimed at discerning listeners who expect studio‑quality sound and comfortable all‑day wear.
