British microbrand Aera Instruments has partnered with American menswear designer Todd Snyder to produce a pair of striking D‑1 Diver watches that blur the line between tool and art. The collaboration yields two colourways – the matte black ‘Blackout’ and the crisp white ‘Whiteout’ – each limited to just 25 numbered pieces. Both take inspiration from Snyder’s off‑road journey through Iceland, where obsidian volcanic sands and glacial waters set the tone for the contrasting palettes.

Built for real‑world use, the 43 mm case is machined from lightweight titanium and coated in diamond‑like carbon, making it about 40 percent lighter than a comparable steel diver and naturally hypoallergenic. Screws on the caseback reinforce the industrial aesthetic and improve water resistance, while the bezel and indices are treated with Super‑LumiNova for low‑light legibility. Inside ticks an elaboré‑grade Swiss automatic movement, visible through the sapphire caseback and regulated for reliability.

Aera and Snyder emphasise functional minimalism. The watch’s clean dial features only what divers need, eschewing date windows or ornate logos. Each piece ships on a customised rubber strap with quick‑release lugs, and the package includes both colour‑coordinated and contrasting straps to suit different moods. Priced at £2,300 (about $2,900), the D‑1 Diver collaboration launches on February 10 at 3 p.m. UK time (10 a.m. EST). Interested buyers can register for the waitlist on Aera’s site. Given the tiny production run, these watches are likely to sell out quickly.
Our coverage of Seiko’s Legacy Collection shows how watch brands draw on their history to create limited editions, but this cross‑Atlantic partnership highlights how independent makers and designers can produce something fresh while respecting dive‑watch tradition.
Whether you favour the volcanic ‘Blackout’ or the icy ‘Whiteout,’ the Aera x Todd Snyder D‑1 Diver proves that collaboration can yield a tool watch that feels both purposeful and collectible.
