Audi Sport is rewriting its performance playbook with the 2027 RS5, the first RS model to adopt a plug‑in hybrid powertrain. While earlier generations relied on naturally aspirated V8s or twin‑turbo V6s, the third‑generation RS5 combines a revised 2.9‑litre twin‑turbo V6 with a 130‑kW (174‑hp) electric motor integrated into an eight‑speed Tiptronic gearbox.

The system delivers a formidable 630 hp and 608 lb‑ft of torque, launching the car from 0–60 mph in about 3.6 seconds. A 25.9‑kWh battery (22 kWh usable) provides up to 52 miles of electric‑only range in European testing and can recharge at up to 11 kW.

Beyond the headline figures, Audi has equipped the new RS5 with a production‑car‑first electromechanical torque vectoring system called Dynamic Torque Control. Housed in an all‑new rear transaxle, the system uses a water‑cooled electric motor, overdrive gears and a conventional differential to shuffle power between the rear wheels in as little as 15 milliseconds, enabling both enhanced grip and an RS Torque Rear drift mode.

Visually, the RS5 gains wider tracks than the regular A5, flared fenders reminiscent of the original Ur‑quattro, and a three‑dimensional honeycomb grille paired with dark Matrix LED headlights and matte oval exhausts. Inside, a three‑screen cockpit (11.9‑inch digital instrument cluster, 14.5‑inch central screen and 10.9‑inch passenger display) integrates RS‑specific data and a lap‑timer function.
Audi will offer the RS5 in Saloon and Avant body styles, although the wagon may remain Europe‑only. U.S. pricing has not yet been finalised, but European orders are open ahead of deliveries slated for summer 2026. Expect a starting price around $125,000.
By merging high‑performance hybrid power with world‑first torque‑vectoring tech, the 2027 RS5 signals a new era for Audi Sport — one that embraces electrification without sacrificing the character and capability enthusiasts expect from the RS badge.
