Four outstanding BMWs pulled from the garage of leading automotive collector Henry Schmitt will hit the RM Sotheby’s auction block between August 15 and August 17. The most decorated competition car in that lot is this 1974 BMW 3.5 CSL IMSA.
This famous rally car is one of four 3.5 CSLs that BMW North America raced during its inaugural 1975 IMSA Camel GT season. This car was also the overall winner of the 12 Hours of Sebring held in the eponymous Florida town in 1975. Star drivers on BMW rally car team including Sam Posey, Brian Redman, Allan Moffat, and Hans-Joachim Stuck steered this car to victory in multiple races during the team’s European and inaugural North American racing seasons.
Awaiting the upcoming RM Sotheby’s collector car auction in Monterey, California, the Schmitt BMW 3.5 CSL IMSA has a restored chassis finished in its Sebring-winning number 25. This trophy-winning rally car is fitted with a period-appropriate 3.5-liter upright M49/3 engine that is capable of producing 600 horsepower.
